Wilhelms (Vilis) Hofmanis's Obituary

Wilhelms (Vilis) Hofmanis, 96, on March 6, 2009. He was the husband of the late Anna (Usne) Hofmanis. Survived by daughter Ilse Farrell of Jenkintown, grandson Ted Farrell of Hoboken, NJ and his fianc Monica Ali. Born in Riga, Latvia. Fled Latvia during WW II, and after living 5 years in Displaced Persons camps in Germany, came to the U.S. in 1950, and obtained his US citizenship immediately upon eligibility in 1955. Was able to successfully resume his profession, utilizing his MS degree in Civil Engineering initially with Reading Railroad, where he designed most of that company's commuter line bridges. He also worked with Urban Engineers and Hudson Engineers until his retirement at the age of 74. He maintained his love of singing throughout his life and was a member of various choirs including a student choir which sang for the kings of both Norway and Sweden. Friends are invited to his funeral service at 11 AM, on Sat., March 14, 2009 at The Oliver H. Bair Funeral Home, 8500 West Chester Pike, Upper Darby, PA. A viewing will precede the service starting at 10 AM. Interment will follow in Glenwood Memorial Gardens, Broomall PA. In his memory, contributions may be made to Daugavas Vanagi, 531 N. 7th St, Phila, Pa,19123 or St John's Latvian Lutheran Church, 301 N Newtown Rd, Newtown Sq, Pa 19073.
