Mr. Thomas R. White III was born on September 28, 1942 at Hahnemann Hospital in Philadelphia to Thomas R. and Bertha White. Mr. White's father was born in 1913 in Philadelphia. He graduated from the University of Pennsylvania and Temple University Law School. He was in the armed service from 1941 to 1946 and was Adjutant General of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. His mother was born in 1914 in Philadelphia. He also had a sister, Sally, and two brothers, Richard and William.
At age two years, Tom's mother became concerned because he did not speak. At age three, he was seen at the University of Pennsylvania Hospital and began a series of studies over the next 10 years, which included the speech and hearing clinic at Pennsylvania State University Speech and Hearing Clinic. After a two-week period of observation it was decided he had some hearing loss but was not completely deaf.
Tom began attending school at nine years of age until his admission to Pennhurst in October 1967. He enjoyed school.
Tom started receiving residential services through Horizon House after Pennhurst closed in 1987. He has lived in Media, PA with two other individuals since July 2011. Previously, he lived in Center City with his long-time housemate, KF, who passed away in 2010. Tom participated in Programs Employing People's Adult Day Program but retired before moving to Media, PA.
Tom was easygoing and good company. He was lovable, affectionate, caring, and relaxing to be around. He was respectful of other people and very perceptive.
A funeral service will be held on Friday, March 26, 2021 at 10:00 AM in the Oliver H. Bair Funeral Chapel, 8500 West Chester Pike, Upper Darby, PA 19082. A viewing will precede the service at 9:30 AM. Interment will be in Gettysburg National Cemetery, Gettysburg, PA.
