Dr. Stephanie Manning Maroney, Ph.D.'s Obituary

Dr. Stephanie Manning Maroney, Ph.D., was a passionate champion and advocate of underserved people; especially children. She passed away on October 14, 2023 after a short illness at the age of 87.

She began her career as a child psychologist in suburban Philadelphia at Culbertson Elementary School and worked in the Philadelphia and Delaware County school districts for many years. She derived deep satisfaction from helping young people overcome their fears and emotional obstacles. Toward the end of her career, she went into private practice in Jenkintown, PA, and served as a counselor to vulnerable senior citizens.

She was the daughter of John Joseph Manning, an FBI agent on Long Island who specialized in chasing down and prosecuting bank robbers and child kidnappers, and she learned early to fight for what she believed in. Her mother, Edith Hoffman Manning, raised the family, and worked as a secretary at Rockefeller Center. Edith was known for her lovely sense of humor that often helped the family get through tough times.

Stephanie was born on November 27, 1935 at Midwood Hospital in Brooklyn and grew up with her two brothers, Kenneth and John. She attended St. Mary's High School in Manhasset and matriculated at St. Joseph's College in New York where she earned her Bachelor's degree, then attended the University of Pennsylvania for her Master's degree and Bryn Mawr College where she received her Doctorate in Psychology in 1983.

On May 3rd, 1964, Stephanie married Peter Brian Maroney in New York City.  The couple raised two children, Peter and Jeanne, together in Newtown Square, PA.  She was an extraordinary mother and will be terribly missed in the hearts of all of those whom she helped and touched.

Stephanie is survived by her two children, Peter and Jeanne, as well as her two brothers Kenneth and John, and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be private.
