Robert L. Kulp, 87, an Upper Gwynedd resident for 52 years, passed away in his home on Saturday, March 22, 2014. Born in North Wales, he was the loving husband of Nancy Frye Thomas Kulp for 11 years. Mr. Kulp is also predeceased by his first wife, Mildred M. (McGirr) Kulp, who died in 1999. Mr. Kulp started working at age 16 driving a milk truck while still in school. He joined the Maritime Service and went through training for the Merchant Marines in 1944 at age 17 because he was too young for the military. He was in Okinawa, Italy and Greece during the war. After the war he went to work in road construction particularly paving. In 1952 he was drafted into the Army. After the Army, he returned to paving, working for Worthington on the PA Turnpike from Kulpsville to Plymouth. Then in 1956 he started his paving company, R.L Kulp Company, until his retirement in 2006. Mr. Kulp loved trains, once having a caboose for an office. He loved the liberty ship, the John W. Brown, arranging for the big guns to be added the ship. He was fond of the ship because it was like one he served on for the Merchant Marines. He enjoyed taking friends and family down for cruises on the ship to see what it was like in the forties and a trip to the engine room was a must as that was his job on the ship. He supported North Wales Fire Company bringing the company's beloved Bertha back from Florida for them. He was also on the advisory board for the North Wales Library. In addition to his wife, Mr. Kulp is survived by three stepchildren Roxanne F. Case of Bangor, Pamela L. Abraham (Gabe) of Perkasie and Tracie L. Rubery (Scott) of North Wales; one grandson Brendan; and one sister Merilyn Forst (Bill) of Hatfield. He is also predeceased by one brother Charles M. Kulp. Mr. Kulp was fond of his nieces Faye Younger (Tom), Wendy Ferrel (Ralph), and Kaye Ines. He is also survived by a nephew, Charles (Chick) Kulp (Ann). A memorial service will be held at 11 AM on Saturday, March 29, 2014 at St. Peter's Lutheran Church, 211 South Main Street, North Wales, PA 19454. A visitation with the family will precede the service from 9:30 AM to 11 AM at the church. Interment in Greenlawn Cemetery, Upper Gwynedd. In lieu of flowers, contributions are requested in Mr. Kulp's name to Caring Hospice, 400 Commerce Drive, Suite C, Fort Washington, PA 19034.
