Moïse
Jean-Baptiste
December 31, 1936 – July 20, 2025
Luc Bertier Moïse Jean-Baptiste was born in Port-au-Prince, Haïti. At the age of 92 years old, he passed away peacefully on July 20, 2025 at his home in Upper Darby, Pennsylvania with his family by his side. Moïse was the son of the late Frédéric and Brigitte (née Barthélemy) Jean-Baptiste. He had four children with Marguerite Guillaume in the early part of his life. He was the beloved husband of the late Françoise Jean-Baptiste with whom he later had three more children.
Moïse worked as a school teacher for Maison Central des Arts et Métiers and later became the interim principal before emigrating to the United States in the 1990s. While in the US, he worked for many years at a laundromat, where he often received visits from friends in the police force, his children, and his grandchildren. Ever the punctual man, Moïse always conducted dry runs before any appointment so that he would arrive on time. Moïse loved reading; he was very rarely seen without a book. Fascinated with the cosmic world, he studied astrology and filled several notebooks with his astrological calculations. Moïse was also a very philanthropic man, and donated regularly to the police department and the Boys Town charity.
A true believer in God, Moïse took great pleasure in praying for others, served as an usher in the Catholic church, and went on pilgrimages to Saut-d'Eau, Haïti. In his 70s, he became a faithful member of the LDS church, and was beloved by his fellow members in the Midwood
area of Brooklyn, New York.
According to his daughter Betty, Moïse had a wonderful, melodious laugh that had a lilt at the end of it. Moïse will be remembered as a good father — a disciplined, organized, and ethical man with a strong sense of integrity.
He is survived by his children, Betty Sawyer, Nixon Jean-Baptiste, Amelie C. Ingrid Pierre, Monique Ortiz, Barbara Jean-Baptiste, Emmanuel Jean-Baptiste, and Elisabeth Jean-Baptiste; his stepson, Herold Daguisan; his brother, Louis Jean-Baptiste; his sisters-in-law, Gertha Jean-Baptiste and Carole Jean-Baptiste; his grandchildren, Grant Eric Sawyer, Arielle Monique Sawyer, Qenishe Jean-Baptiste, Wesley Pierre, Johanne Corine Saidu-Kamara, Rosemelie Auguste, Raynaldo Ortiz, Noël Ortiz, Sebastien Jean-Baptiste, Christian Jean-Baptiste, Isabelle Jean-Baptiste, and Saraphina Jean-Baptiste; his nephews and nieces, Didier Jean-Baptiste, Natalie Fleischer, Valerie Barron, Stanley Jean-Baptiste, Ricardo Jean-Baptiste, and Michel Jonas Jean-Baptiste; and his grand-nephews and grand-nieces; Rodney Barron Jr., Adrian Fleischer, Kayla Barron, Emmy Gaspard, and Faith Gaspard.
Relatives and friends are invited to a viewing on Saturday, August 2, 2025 from 10am to 12pm at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 3913 Chestnut St, Philadelphia, PA 19104.
