October 8, 1922 – October 4, 2018
Michael Mattia, of Upper Darby, passed away on October 4, 2018. He was 95 years old. Born in Philadelphia, he was the son of the late Erminio and Teresina Gemma (Perna) Mattia.
Mr. Mattia served as a flight officer for the U.S. Army during World War II. He operated a single-engine, pursuit-type aircraft. He also performed duties as a B-17 co-pilot.
Mr. Mattia was a graduate of the Williamson College of the Trades in Brick Mason. He continued his education at the University of Pennsylvania, graduating in 1950 with a bachelor's degree in chemical engineering. He worked for many years as a plastics engineer for the Budd Company.
Mr. Mattia enjoyed a lifelong passion for dancing which included competitive ballroom.
He is survived by his three nephews, John Mattia, Matthew Mattia and David Mattia (Amy). In addition to his parents, he is predeceased by his brother, Manlio Mattia.
Relatives and friends are invited to a visitation on Saturday, October 13, 2018 from 9:30 AM to 11:30 AM in The Oliver H. Bair Funeral Chapel, 8500 West Chester Pike, Upper Darby, PA 19082. A service will follow at 11:30 AM in the Chapel. Interment in Holy Cross Cemetery, Yeadon.
