Marie D. Bundy's Obituary

Marie Dolly Bundy was born on June 1, 1918 in Philadelphia, PA. She was the middle child of the five daughters of Adelaide and William Hill. She was educated in the public schools of Philadelphia and graduated from South Philadelphia High School. Raised in a loving, church-going family, she grew up in exciting and trying times. She had a treasure chest of memories of the Roaring Twenties, the Depression and World War II.

Marie was married and widowed twice. She lost her first husband, Bennie Burress, in 1967. She married a second time and, sadly, Ivan Bundy preceded her in death.

Marie loved children but was never blessed with her own. She dedicated herself in her long career to helping others. She worked full time in a variety of care-taking jobs serving the elderly, the disabled, and children with special needs who were most dear to her heart. When she reached retirement age, she refused to retire. Instead she sought private employment, taking care of babies and children until she was well past seventy.

Marie was an avid reader of books, newspapers, and magazines. Music gave her great joy especially gospel songs and popular vocal artists like Nat King Cole. She loved any holiday that had a parade she could attend. She enjoyed trips to Wildwood on the 4th of July, excursions to Pennsylvania Dutch country, and Broadway musicals. She lived independently until 2010 when ill health brought her to Bala Nursing and Rehabilitation Center where she found a new group of friends.

Marie outlived most of her close family and many of her friends, but her memory is cherished by those who remain, especially by her last baby, Katie.


A Funeral Service will be held at 10:00 AM on Wednesday, March 2, 2016 at Tindley Temple United Methodist Church, 750 South Broad Street, Philadelphia, PA 19146 with Rev. Robert L. Johnson officiating.
