Joseph Victor
Mcmullen
April 23, 1958 – April 17, 2025
Joseph Victor McMullen, age 66, of Hockessin, DE, formerly of Secane, PA, passed away peacefully at home on April 17, 2025 from complications of cancer treatment. Born April 23, 1958, in Philadelphia, PA, he was son of James L. McMullen, Sr. and the late Angela Jean (Mortellite) McMullen. He was the beloved husband of Jiewen Jane Yan-McMullen for the last 26 years, and doting father of Violet (Angela) McMullen and Joseph S. McMullen.
Joseph graduated from Ridley High School in 1976. Though he was never the biggest fan of school, he pursued higher education and earned three degrees after high school. He earned an Associate of Applied Science from Delaware County Community College in 1978, a Bachelor of Science from Neumann University in 1983, and a Master of Science in Management and Supervision from Wilmington University in 1986. He bought his first house in Downingtown, PA and worked for Dupont Experimental Station in DE where he met the love of his life and married in 1998. They finally settled in Hockessin, DE.
Joe had a love for nature. He loved taking his kids fishing or finding salamanders in their backyard. He enjoyed caring for his wife and children, his home, and his yard. Joe traveled the world with his family, making multiple trips to different countries in Europe and Asia. He loved visiting scenic national parks and historical monuments, but most of all, he loved to try out the local cuisine wherever he was visiting. Joe was outgoing and friendly and would strike up a conversation with anyone he met. He seemed to have boundless energy, and his infectious laugh and quick humor brought countless smiles.
Joe had a lifelong love of music, especially rock and roll. He was always proud to say that he was a DJ and worked for the Audio Visual studio at his university. He was a gifted drummer and was frequently writing song lyrics in the Notes app on his phone. He and his brother-in-law, Mike, formed "The Whimsical Glimpse Band" where they wrote and recorded many songs together, with Joe playing the drums. He also enjoyed spending time at Delaware Park and playing the lottery. He loved to watch and support all Philadelphia sports teams, especially the Eagles.
In addition to his wife and kids, Joseph is survived by his father, James L. McMullen, Sr., his sister, Susan (Michael) Melton, his nephew James, his niece, Michele, his nephew, Yining "Dong-Dong" Bei, his in-laws, Mr. Yan and Mrs. Gao, his aunt, Margie (Sam) Speer, and many cousins and friends. He is predeceased by his mother, Angela Jean McMullen (Mortellite), his brother, James McMullen Jr., and his aunts, Joanna (Antonio) Romero and Nancy DeGatis.
Family and friends are invited to his visitation from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM on Friday, June 6th at St. Mary of the Assumption Church, 7200 Lancaster Pike, Hockessin, DE 19707. Followed by a Catholic Funeral Mass at 11:00 AM. A celebration of life will be held after Mass at St. Mary's room of the church.
