Janet Covert Shay, a former Philadelphia and Delaware County public relations executive and journalist, died on May 22, 2012 in Orlando, Florida. She was 77 years old. A distinguished alumna and scholarship student of the Charles Morris Price School of Advertising and Journalism in Philadelphia, she attended the University of Pennsylvania, majoring in Sociology, and studied at The Wallingford Art Center, Delaware County, PA. She was a scholarship student and graduate of the Academy of Notre Dame deNamur, Villanova, PA. Active as a junior member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, she served as junior chairman and secretary of the organization's Quaker City Chapter; as Pennsylvania State Outstanding Junior; and as National Vice Chairman of the Junior Membership Committee. She was subsequently invited to serve as National Junior Chairman of the NSDAR by Mrs. Doris Ashmead White of Lubec, ME, past President General. Janet received professional and public service awards from the Philadelphia Club of Advertising Women, Philadelphia Public Relations Association, Eisenhower Exchange Fellowships, Inc., American Red Cross and Muscular Dystrophy Associations, Inc. She is listed in the 5th edition of Who's Who of American Women and Dictionary of International Biography (under nee Janet C. Yeager, of Havertown, PA). Co-founder and board member of the Delaware County Press Club and publicist for the Delaware County Bicentennial observances, Janet served as public information officer for both the County of Delaware and Upper Darby Township. She assisted on political campaigns for former Ambassador to Switzerland, Faith Ryan Whittlesey, and served on the board of directors of the American Red Cross, Upper Darby Branch. Formerly married to the late architect, Howell Lewis Shay, Jr., of Rose Valley, PA, Janet is survived by a sister, Susan C. Lee, of Orlando, FL. A private burial was held on Tuesday, May 29, 2012 in Old Cathedral Cemetery, Philadelphia.
