Jane C. Nightlinger's Obituary

Jane C. Nightlinger, of Philadelphia, passed away quietly on September 28, 2020 at Meadow Glen Phoebe Richland personal care home near Quakertown, where she had lived since March 2020.  She was 91 years old, and passed only two days before her 92nd birthday.  Born in Abington, PA, she was the daughter of the late Harold and Iris (Johnson) Nightlinger.  She was a graduate of Abington High School and took additional coursework in secretarial services.

Jane worked for over thirty years as an executive secretary for Gulf Oil, and also as a secretary for a legal firm in Philadelphia until her retirement.  Jane loved traveling and exploring Philadelphia and the surrounding suburbs, and was skilled in taking public transit everywhere and anywhere.  There was rarely a day when she was not out exploring the city.  Over the years, Jane traveled both in groups and independently to many places including Spain, England, and France.  One very memorable trip was taking the Trans Canada Railway by herself, entirely across Canada to British Columbia.  She was particularly fond of traveling on trains, and this interest was likely sparked very early as her beloved father was a train conductor on the Pennsylvania Railroad.  Jane had also collected an impressive assortment of public transit schedules from everywhere she had visited, even other countries.

Jane loved animals of all kinds, but particularly cats, and had two beloved cats in her later years named "Callie" and "Pinky".  She also never forgot her much loved childhood dog, a wonderful collie named "Duke" and talked about him often in her final days.  Jane was a very kind and charitable woman who frequently supported charities such as hospitals and animal shelters.  Jane was also well known for her thoughtfulness in sending greeting cards of all kinds to family and friends for many, many years.  She never missed a birthday, holiday, or special event without sending a card.  That endearing tradition of Jane's will be greatly missed.

She is survived by her cousins, Dr. David R. Funk of Riegelsville, PA., Marguerite Gullickson of Perkasie, PA., and Dorothy Willsie of Saratoga Springs, NY.

Inurnment will be private in The Church of St. Luke and The Epiphany in Philadelphia.  In lieu of flowers donations are requested for local animal shelters, or a charity of your choice.

Funeral arrangements entrusted to The Oliver H. Bair Co.  (215) 563-1580
