James E. Colberg, MD, FACS, died of dementia on September 11, 2024 at Fountain View at Logan Square in Philadelphia at the age of 91.
Born in Milwaukee, Dr. Colberg graduated from Riverside High School in Milwaukee, WI, in 1951 and entered Williams College in Williamstown, MA, as a Tyng Scholar. After graduating from Williams in 1955, he entered Harvard Medical School and earned a medical degree in 1959. After completing an internship at Columbia University, he served at the National Institutes of Allergy and Infectious Diseases in Bethesda, MD, followed by a surgical residency in Cleveland, OH. In 1972 he joined the faculty at Jefferson Medical College, now the Sidney Kimmel Medical College, where he served as assistant professor of surgery and attending physician for 30 years, retiring in 2002. Dr. Colberg had an avid interest in late 18th century American furniture, silver, and prints. He was a long-time, active member of St. Peter's Episcopal Church in Philadelphia.
He is survived by his wife, Kathleen A. Stephenson; a daughter Elizabeth C. Fleming (Richard R.), a son, James C.E. Colberg, and a son, Edward P. Colberg (Lauren T.); as well as four grandchildren: Graham T. Fleming, Benjamin D. Fleming, Lucia R. Colberg and James S. Colberg.
A funeral service will be held on Saturday, October 26, 2024, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Peter's Episcopal Church, Third & Pine Streets, Philadelphia, PA 19106. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. The family suggests donations to Preserving St. Peter's Church, 313 Pine Street, Philadelphia, PA. 19106.
