Elizabeth "Betty" Halteman Scott passed away on July 30, 2026, surrounded by her family. She lived a long and rich life defined by love of family, competitive spirit, artistic passion, and an enduring sense of adventure. Always full of fun and a little mischief, Betty will most be remembered for her care, grace, and generosity for her family, friends, and community.

Betty grew up in Moorestown, New Jersey, the daughter of LeRoy (Roy) Halteman, a Philadelphia builder, and Elizabeth (Bessie) nee Brittain, who taught in the Camden, New Jersey public school system for 42 years. She attended Moorestown Friends School, where she excelled athletically, particularly in field hockey and basketball. She trained under the legendary Constance Applebee, credited with bringing field hockey to the United States in 1901, and later competed for All American in Berkeley, California in 1956. At Moorestown Friends, Betty played on multiple varsity teams and served as Co-Captain of the school's field hockey team. Summers were spent with trips to Maine and with her family to Ocean City, New Jersey - a tradition she would carry forward for her own children and grandchildren, still shared today in her honor.

Betty went on to attend and graduate from Wilson College, followed by a Master's degree in Education from the University of Pennsylvania. While at Wilson, she spent her summers working with the Experiment in International Living in Holland and another with the American Friend Services Committee in Turkey building a playground for a local village. After graduation, she became a teacher at Riverside HS before attending Penn. It was at Penn that a mutual friend introduced her to W. Russell (Russ) Scott, Jr. Their blind date left no doubt that they belonged together, and Russ and Betty were married on August 29, 1963. They honeymooned in Bermuda before settling in Media, Pennsylvania, close to family in the Philadelphia area.

Betty and Russ welcomed their first daughter, Jennifer, in Media in November 1965 with daughter Julia in July, 1970. After a move to Mendham, New Jersey, they welcomed Jill in May 1973. Betty devoted herself to raising their growing family while Russ built his career at AT&T and later NYNEX. In 1974, the family relocated to the Boston area, where they built a close-knit community of friends, playing tennis and bridge, taking ski trips with Russ's fraternity brothers, and hiking the Appalachian Trail together.

Betty was very fond of her time in Maine and when an opportunity arose to purchase a home on Rangeley Lakes, the family began a treasured tradition of summers, holidays, and winters there, including hosting daughter Jill's wedding reception on the property. Ever entrepreneurial, Betty channeled her deep love of art into founding several businesses, arranging private tours that gave museum patrons access to art in private homes. Her company, Heritage Tours, flourished, running tours in partnership with institutions including the Art Institute of Chicago, the Museum of Modern Art, and the Smithsonian. Betty and Russ also shared a love of sports, enjoying tennis, paddle tennis, and later golf together.

After many happy years in the Weston, Massachusetts area, Betty and Russ retired to Wilmington, North Carolina, where they built a home that became a gathering place for children, grandchildren, and friends. Betty could always be found with a book in hand, reading for hours to her grandchildren; her family was, without question, the great love of her life.

Following Russ's passing, Betty moved back to the Philadelphia area to be near her daughter Julie and reconnect with family and friends. She never lost her love of travel, journeying to French Polynesia, France, and Greece with her daughter Jennifer and her family and spending a month each summer in Vermont with her daughter Jill and her family. Betty also spent many happy years with Charles (Chick) King in State College, Pennsylvania, where the two enjoyed a wonderful circle of friends at The Village at Penn State until Chick's passing. Betty then returned to the Philadelphia area, spending her final years in an apartment at the Hearth at Drexel. Her daughter Julie saw her nearly every day and Betty cherished countless visits with her children and grandchildren, even in her final days.

Betty was deeply loved by so many. She is survived by her daughters, Jennifer Scott Fonstad, Julie Scott, and Jill Warrington; her sons-in-law, Jason Rekulak and Greg Warrington; and her grandchildren, Karina Fonstad, Luca Fonstad, Tessa Fonstad, Thea Fonstad, Sam Rekulak, Anna Rekulak, Grace Warrington, and Peter Warrington. She was predeceased by her granddaughter, Elina Warrington.

Funeral services will be held Sunday, August 9th at 1:00 PM at Westminster Cemetery, followed by a reception at The Landing Kitchen.
