Elaine K. Coate, age 90 died peacefully on March 17, 2018 following a heart attack. Born and raised in Philadelphia, daughter of William H. and Cecelia Kessler Katz. Beloved wife of the late James McKenzie Coate and preceded in death by daughter Cecelia "Cissy" Coate. Survived by Cathryn Coate (the late Robert Capanna), James M. Coate, Jr. (Sirlei) and Robert H.D. Coate (Tracy), six grandchildren Stephen (Katie), Mariel, Cecelia, Hazel, Henry and Analuiza, great grandson, Nico and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Graduate of Abington Friends School (1946) and Earlham College (1950), she was executive director of the Friends Association for Care and Protection of Children, Clerk of Valley Monthly Meeting, Founder of the Valley Forge Branch of AAUW, an avid bird watcher, world traveler, poet, civic leader and public advocate for children and youth. She will be sorely missed by her family and friends.

A Memorial Service will be held at Valley Friends Meeting, 1121 Old Eagle School Road, Wayne PA on Sunday May 13 at 3:00 PM. Contributions in her memory can be made to the Cape May Bird Observatory 701 E. Lake Dr, Cape May Point, NJ 08212
