Edward Gosfield, Jr., M.D.'s Obituary

Edward Gosfield, Jr., M.D., FACC, age 94, died on April 25, 2013, , from complications following surgery at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. He was educated at the University of Pennsylvania, receiving his Bachelor of Arts degree with Distinction, Major Honors in Philosophy and Phi Beta Kappa. He received his Master of Science degree in Education, and the degree of Doctor of Medicine in 1944. He served in the Medical Corps of the Army with the rank of Captain and served as Acting Commanding Officer at the Station Hospital at Fort Eustace, Virginia. In 1947, Dr. Gosfield matriculated at The Graduate School of Medicine of the University of Pennsylvania. During 1948-1950, he returned to The Graduate Hospital, completing his training as a resident in medicine in 1950. He was then appointed to the faculty of the University's Graduate School of Medicine, and subsequently to the faculty of the School of Medicine, as well as the medical staff of The Graduate Hospital, where he remained his entire career. Dr. Gosfield held numerous posts during his tenure at Graduate. He founded the Hypertension Clinic in 1957, and was Chief of the clinic until 1980, contributing numerous articles to medical literature from this clinic. He was elected Chairman of the Medical Board in 1975, and again in 1992. He twice served as Acting Chairman of the Department of Medicine, first from 1979 to 1980, and again from 1990 to 1992. Then he served as Associate Chairman of the Department of Medicine. He was a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology, and a member of the College of Physicians of Philadelphia. He served as attending physician to the Queen of England when she visited the United States in 1976. Dr. Gosfield was a consultant to Wills Eye Hospital, Community Hospital, Veterans' Hospital of Wilmington, Delaware. He retired from the solo practice of cardiology and internal medicine at the age of 83. At his retirement, he was Emeritus Associate Professor of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine. Three years after he had retired from active practice, the leadership of the cardiology residency program at Graduate asked him to return to teach the residents how to manage cases in the cardiac care unit. He said he would teach them "what it means to be a doctor." He was an avid world traveler. Known for his dapper appearance, he was almost never without a bowtie. He taught all his sons and grandsons and many of his residents how to tie a bowtie. Dr. Gosfield was married in 1941 to Cecelia Gevov, who died in 1983. In 1985, Dr. Gosfield married Thelma Bradburd White, Ed.D., who is a nurse practitioner and was Supervisor of Nursing for the School District of Philadelphia. He is survived by his wife, Thelma; his children Dr. Edward Gosfield, III; Alice G. Gosfield (Edward F. Shay); Gregory G. Gosfield (Wendy): his shared children, Stella White Fisher, Michael White (Rose); and his four grandchildren, Daniel Shay, Alexander, William, and James Gosfield; and his step-grandchildren, Nicholas and Rachel Fisher, Jennifer (Mark) Aguon, Melanie (Nathan) Hangca, Gabriel and Raymond White, and Rebecca (Jack) Camacho, and six step-great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, May 11, 2013 at 11AM at the College of Physicians of Philadelphia, 19 S. 22d St, Phila, PA. 19103.
