Doris Joan (nee Murphy) Nordell, 87, formerly of Paoli and Wayne, passed away at St. Martha Manor in Downingtown on Thursday, November 27, 2014. Born in Philadelphia, she was the beloved wife of the late Bernard Nordell. Doris is survived by her seven children David Nordell of Philadelphia; Patricia Nordell of Silver Spring, MD; Nancy Nordell Metz of Virginia Beach, VA; Kathy Withrow (Skip) of Malvern; Thomas Nordell of Philadelphia; Timothy Nordell of Norfolk, VA; and Mary Montgomery (Frank) of Downingtown; 13 grandchildren; Seth Orensky; Jeremy, Matthew and Tristan Metz; James, Chris and Kelsey Withrow; Justin Nordell and Miranda Nordell Bolenbaugh; Alex Roane Nordell; Lauren, Heather and Addison Montgomery and three great grandchildren, Sophia, T.Wolf and Bambi Metz. She is also predeceased by one brother, Joseph Murphy and one sister, Betty Bertram. Doris was the youngest of three children born to Anthony J Murphy and Anna Bunting Murphy. She spent a lot of time on the stage in her younger years singing, dancing and playing the piano. Her grandfather was an actor on the Vaudeville stage and the love of music ran in the family. While Doris was in high school, World War II started and she spent her evenings entertaining the soldiers dancing in USO shows. When she left high school, Doris took a job with Bell Telephone Company and stayed there until she was married on April 22, 1950 to Bernard, whom she had met at a dance in the city. They lived in Philadelphia where David was born. They bought their first house and moved to Levittown where Patricia and Nancy were born. Bernie was transferred to Rhode Island where they then welcomed Kathy, Tom and Tim. Another transfer with the same company brought them back to the area where they settled in Wayne and had their last child, Mary. They lived there for 27 years until Bernie died in 1990 after 40 years of marriage. Doris then moved into Paoli Pointe Condos where she found many friends and was either travelling, exercising, or spending time with one of the many grandchildren. Over the many years living in Wayne, Doris spent a great amount of her time at St. Katherine of Siena school volunteering as a homeroom parent, cub scout leader and cafeteria mom. As her children got older, you could still find Doris in the gym, teaching slimnastics and aerobic classes. Doris then worked as a secretary for Radnor Middle school and at Wayneco as the evening supervisor. Her favorite job of all had to be as a dance instructor for the youngest of the children at Betsy Daily's dance studio in Berwyn. Her passion for helping others and living an active life was only surpassed by her love of young children, animals, music and dance. A Funeral Mass will be held on Thursday, December 4, 2014 at 11am at St. Norbert Church, 50 Leopard Road, Paoli, PA 19301. A viewing will precede Mass from 10am to 11am at the church.
