Denise
Gray
April 7, 1959 – May 9, 2024
Denise Gray, a lifelong resident of Philadelphia, passed away on May 9, 2024, at the age of 65. Born in Philadelphia on April 7, 1959, to the late Martha Gray, Denise attended school in the University City section of the city. Her life was marked by incredible perseverance and resilience.
Despite facing significant challenges, including foster care, homelessness, and rehabilitation programs, Denise never lost hope. She gave birth to her only child, Anthony Gray-Bolden, at the age of 14. Recognizing the need for stability in his life, she made the difficult decision to entrust him to the Women's Christian Alliance, where he was lovingly adopted by Grace and Jake Bolden.
In 1997, Denise found immense joy in reuniting with her son Anthony. They remained in periodic contact over the years, and in her later years, Denise entrusted Anthony and Ayanna (daughter in law) to advocate for her medical needs and well-being, to ensure she enjoyed a good quality of life.
Denise took great pride in sharing with her care providers the accomplishments of her son: Anthony graduated from college, earned several degrees, had a semi-professional basketball career, was inducted into the West Chester Basketball Hall of Fame, became a Principal by profession, was ordained as a minister, and founded a nonprofit Prodigal Sons Initiatives.
Denise accepted Jesus Christ as her savior in 2013, a faith that brought her great comfort. She cherished her visits with her grandsons, Devon, Isaiah, and Jonathan. Denise was known for her affectionate nature, her loyalty, and her conscientiousness. She was well-loved by her Horizon House family and had a wonderful sense of humor.
Denise last place of residency was at Ivy Hill Rehabilitation Center and Where We Find Hope under the supervision of Joy Powell prior to fallen ill. She passed away early morning at Meadow Springs Rehabilitation Center.
Denise loved music, flowers, and dancing, and found joy in playing card games, particularly pinochle. She also loved playing Bingo at Project Hope, where she won many prizes.
Denise is survived by her son Anthony Gray-Bolden (Ayanna) of Middletown, DE; her grandsons; and her siblings John Gray, Diane Gray, Tyrone Jackson, Robert Tah Gray, Gregory Gray, Walter Gray, and Clinton Gray. She also leaves behind many devoted caretakers and supporters who enriched her life, including her devoted loving care provider and case manager, Barbara Peyton.
Memorial services will be held later. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Prodigal Sons Initiative: P.O. Box 671, Odessa, DE 19730. All proceeds will go to establishing a Grace for Denise Foundation which will serve to support transitional housing services for people with mental health disabilities, foster children who age out of foster care, family reunification support, prison re-entry programming, and advocacy for elderly and foster care abuse.
