[Aspacia] Catherine Tachie was born in Philadelphia, PA on September 18, 1925. Her parents were Peter Tachie and Aphrodite Fessides (maiden name). Catherine (as she preferred to be called) was an only child but grew up close to her younger first cousins: Mary Gianakopolous (Detroit, MI), Steve Deleyiannis (Alexandria, VA), John Lazare (Newark, DE), and Connie Lazare (Hainesport, NJ). She attended the Huey elementary school, Lea Junior High, and West Philadelphia High School where she graduated as a top student in 1943 - despite developing epilepsy - a condition that would plague her throughout her life. She was a whiz in mathematics and was offered a full scholarship to the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia but was steered away from getting a college degree. She instead went to work for a local bank (First Pennsylvania) where she continued for some years before getting married. Catherine married Anthony Sousounis of Naxos, Greece in December 1956. Together they had two sons. Nicholas was born in November 1957 and Peter was born three years later in July 1960. The marriage was not going well and Catherine and Anthony parted company before Catherine moved to the suburbs in Upper Darby, Pennsylvania with her sons, her parents, and her Uncle Pete. Catherine took on the role of single parent and raised her children with the help and support of her mother, father, and her uncle. She made a lot of sacrifices and the family lived modestly. Catherine enjoyed few hobbies but had a passion for needlepoint, embroidery, and baking. She also loved going to the Jersey Shore in Wildwood to lie on the beach, ride waves in the surf, and walk on the boardwalk. The annual shore trips became less frequent after her mother passed in 1982 - her father having passed 10 years earlier. She became more and more independent at least for a time after her sons moved out of the house and she was alone after her Uncle Pete passed in 1985. Nick still lived close by, working as an engineer in the Philadelphia area, to keep an eye on her while Peter pursued his career in Meteorology outside the Philadelphia area. Happy days for Catherine continued as Peter married Maria Harris of Broomall, PA in 1987 and Nick married Valerie Mondzelewski of Wilmington, DE in 1995. During that time Catherine became a bit of a landlord as she took on several boarders to keep her company over the next 10-15 years. The extended Harris family also played a tremendous role in keeping an eye on her. In early 2002 Catherine became a resident of Broomall Rehabilitation and Nursing Center in Broomall, PA mainly because of issues related to her ability to balance. She was a very young resident in many people's minds. But, life slowed down for her over the next ten years and she looked forward to visitors especially later on and especially when her sons, their wives, and grandchildren visited. She is survived by her son Nicholas, his wife Valerie, and their son Steven; and also by her son Peter, his wife Maria, and their children Katrina, Basil, and Christopher. A funeral Mass will be held on Monday, June 4, 2012 at 11AM at St. Luke Greek Orthodox Church, 35 North Malin Road, Broomall, PA 19008. A viewing will precede Mass from 10AM to 11AM at the church. Interment will follow in Fernwood Cemetery, Lansdowne, PA. In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations to St. Luke Greek Orthodox Church, see address above. Arrangements are by The Oliver H. Bair Funeral Home. (610) 449-8585.
