Angela Jean McMullen, age 88, of Brigantine, NJ (formerly of Secane, PA) passed away at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania on June 21, 2023 after bravely battling lymphoma for three years. Born in Philadelphia, PA, she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Susan (Ferro) Mortellite, and stepdaughter of Abraham Linc Burstein, Esq.  She was also the beloved wife of James L. McMullen, Sr, and recently celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary on June 6th.

Angela was born in Philadelphia in 1935 and graduated in 1952 from West Philadelphia High School. She was a proud member of the Color Guard. She met the love of her life when she was just 12 years old. By 18, she married him and went on to have 3 children. She worked at Gimbel's department stores in the credit department, and later at International House in Philadelphia, which boarded foreign students, and became "mom" to many of them. Angela was a firm believer in education and encouraged all she knew to procure higher education. She obtained a degree in Business Administration and later became a medical assistant. She then used her business and medical assistant degrees to work for an allergist until she and her husband moved to a condominium on the beach in Brigantine, NJ in 1994.

In Brigantine, she worked at Taj Mahal Casino as a concierge until 2006. She then returned to healthcare and worked as a medical assistant for a local physician in Brigantine who later joined the AtlantiCare organization. She again became "mom or grandmom" to the younger staff and was loved by many patients. Angela was a member of Sons of Italy in Brigantine and volunteered at the Senior Center of Brigantine.

Unfortunately, she developed Hodgkin's lymphoma in 2020 at age 85 and began the long fight against the odds.

All who knew her enjoyed her boundless energy, quick wit, generosity, kind and compassionate nature, and excellent Italian cooking. Truly a "mom" to everyone, she opened her heart up to help others. She was well known for her sunbathing, love of the beach and pool, playing the slots at the casino, and cooking and feeding everyone.

Angela is predeceased by her eldest son, James L. McMullen, Jr. DO and is survived by her daughter-in-law Deborah McMullen of Port Charlotte, FL, and step grandson, Chad Leitzke.  She is survived by her son, Joseph (Jiewen "Jane") McMullen of Hockessin DE, and her daughter, Susan (Michael) Melton, MD of Glen Mills, PA. She is also survived by her 4 grandchildren: James Melton, Michele Melton, Violet McMullen, and Joseph McMullen.

She is predeceased by her loving sister, Joanna (Antonio) Romero.  She is survived by her sister-in-law Margie (Sam) Speer and half-sister Bernadette Adams.  She is also survived by her nephews: Guy (Robin) Romero, Sam (Tina) Romero, Art (Melissa) Romero, Tony Romero (Liz Romero), Sam Speer (Susan Marquet), and Stephen Speer (Rose DeGatis). She is also survived by many great nieces and nephews and wonderful friends.

A memorial service will be held privately at Mercato Ristorante & Bar in Newtown Square, PA.  In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (www.lls.org) or American Cancer Society (www.cancer.org).
