Alfred E. Rizzio's Obituary

Everyone is always curious about the people who help to create the legendary looks of famous actresses and singers. Watermark resident Alfred Rizzio was one of the "stars" behind the stars of film and stage, having styled many of Hollywood's well-known actresses' and singers' hair. His prominent list of legendary figures includes Rita Hayworth, Joan Crawford, Elsa Lancaster, Eve Arden, Teresa Wright, Dorothy McGuire, and Frances Langford. Mr. Rizzio said he enjoyed working with all the Hollywood stars but found Dorothy McGuire and Joan Crawford to be two of his most gracious and enjoyable customers. "Ms. McGuire and Ms. Crawford were exceptionally enjoyable to work with," said Mr. Rizzio. "There was more personal attention and feelings of mutual respect between us - they acted as if they were no different from anyone else." A native Philadelphian, Mr. Rizzio decided to go into hairstyling while he was working for the government. After leaving hairdressing school, Mr. Rizzio opened his own studio called "Alfredo's Hairdressing" in Rittenhouse Square. He was then called into the service during World War II and upon his return, went to San Francisco to do hairstyling for Elizabeth Arden. Mr. Rizzio then moved to Hollywood, California where he continued to work for Elizabeth Arden, styling hair for fashionable women. "That whole chapter of my life is like picking up an interesting book and starting to read in the middle where everything exciting is happening," said Mr. Rizzio. "It was truly a fascinating lifestyle." Mr. Rizzio returned to Philadelphia where he continued to style and cut hair on the Main Line in well-known places such as Wynnewood, Villanova and Bryn Mawr. As a resident of Logan Square East, he was busy on several committees, lending his artistic flair for detail to the community. In addition to chairing the Arts and Decorations Committee, he designed fresh floral arrangements weekly for the lounge and dining room areas. He also chaired the House Committee. "I became acquainted with Logan Square East when we were looking at living options for my mother. I later came back and became a resident because it was right in the heart of Philadelphia, close to the Art Museum, the Academy of Music, theatres, and much more," said Mr. Rizzio. "Philadelphia is a very historical and vibrant city - when I feel down, I can just walk out my doorstep to the hustle and bustle of the city." Mr. Rizzio took further advantage of Logan Square East's central location by attending classes at Philadelphia Community College. He concentrated in computer programming and data processing. In addition to his work at the salon and in the community, Mr. Rizzio enjoyed traveling and saw almost two-thirds of the world including England, France, Spain, Germany, Austria, Australia, South America, the Philippines, the Caribbean, and Japan. "I enjoy a change of pace with my lifestyle - I still enjoy styling hair and I like to be active with the community," said Mr. Rizzio. He is survived by cousins Dennis A. Marrone (Sandy), Louise Larson (Jeff), Robert S. Marrone (Patricia), and Brady L. Marrone (Laurie) as well as his four youngest cousins, Bobby, Chris, Dan and Alex, whom affectionally called him "Uncle Al". Mr. Rizzio is predeceased by cousin Samuel A. Marrone (Mary). He is also survived by his dear friend Michel Hollenback Bowers as well as his many friends and staff members at The Watermark at Logan Square. A funeral Mass will be held on Friday, November 9, 2012 at 10:00 A.M. in the Chapel of the Cathedral Basilica of Saints Peter & Paul, 18th Street and Benjamin Franklin Parkway, Philadelphia, PA 19103. A viewing will precede Mass from 9:00 A.M. to 10:00 A.M. in the Chapel. Entombment will follow Mass in Chelten Hills Cemetery in Philadelphia. Bair Funeral Home (215) 563-1580. -Portions of the obituary taken from an edition of the "Logan Log"
